A traumatic experience is an event that threatens someone’s life, safety, or well-being and overwhelms one’s capacity to cope. Some examples include:

•   Child maltreatment

•   Witnessing violence

•   Natural disasters

•   Loss of loved ones

•   Serious accidents

•   Medical trauma
